Sustainability on tap
As an avid supporter of sustainability in the wine industry, Master of Wine Peter Scudamore-Smith introduced Queensland’s first refillable wine dispensary designed for retail takeaway wine. The environmentally friendly KeyKegs have also been widely adopted by the hospitality industry, providing a sustainable and value-based option for wine-on-tap.
NextGen installs or delivers 20 litre and 30 litre KeyKegs, offering a turn-key system, including portable, benchtop wine-on-tap dispensing of local, low miles, quality Australian artisan wines.
KeyKegs ensure wine preservation
KeyKegs ensure wine is served as fresh as the day it was made.
- The kegs lock in wine freshness using a trademarked Bag-in-Keg Technology. This technology prevents contamination, oxidation and degradation through an airtight barrier.
- There is no need to use any inert gases to blanket the wine to protect it from oxidation. No gas is used at all during filling and during dispensing, any type of external pressure can be used such as an air compressor.
- Once tapped, a KeyKeg of wine will keep fresh for over two months. This is a substantial difference when compared to glass bottles that keep fresh for only a day or two after opening.
- Using KeyKegs will ensure your customers enjoy a consistent ‘wine by the glass’ each time.
Sustainable wine packaging
Not only do KeyKegs ensure wine is served fresh every time to the customer, they also provide a range of sustainability benefits.
Just one 20 litre KeyKeg:
🍷 Is equal to 27 bottles of wine
🍷 Reduces glass waste by 16 kg
🍷 Reduces cardboard waste by 1.6 kg
🍷 Reduces bottled wine storage footprint by 50%
KeyKegs are currently 86% recyclable in compliance with the ISO18604 standard for packaging-material recycling. While 86% is suitable for recycling, KeyKegs are designed to be circular rather than recyclable kegs. Each new KeyKeg contains 53% circular material that has been collected, sorted and reprocessed for use in the new KeyKeg. This circular approach means circular materials can be reused rather than be incinerated or used as landfill.
KeyKegs equal improved efficiency
Did you know that each 20 litre KeyKeg holds the equivalent of 133 glasses of wine? Tapping a KeyKeg is more efficient and effective compared to handling, cooling and opening individual bottles of wine. This leaves hospitality staff to spend more time attending to customers and diners. In addition, there is no spillage, no spoilage and no empty bottles to dispose of.
Increase your range of wine
Using KeyKegs allows you to serve a broad range of ‘wine by the glass’ to customers, without the risk of spoilage or waste. Once tapped, a Key Keg will keep the wine fresh for over two months compared to individual wine bottles that will spoil after a day or two after opening.
Maintenance and storage innovation
KeyKegs do not require any maintenance or any cleaning. This saves precious time, valuable water and energy, along with eliminating the need for cleaning chemicals.
The kegs are lightweight and ergonomic with an easy-to-handle grip ring and basecup. A filled keg of wine requires no heavy lifting equipment, trollies or hand trucks.
They are also stackable and stable allowing for optimised storage at your hospitality venue and a reduction in the wine’s storage footprint by over 50% when compared to bottled wine. Empty wine kegs can be crushed to save further storage space.
Transport savings
Transporting KeyKegs of wine has a lower shipping weight compared to glass bottles which reduces the carbon footprint. A full truck load of KeyKegs can fit 35% more beverage in the truck compared to glass bottles, with only 5% of the total weight of the freight being the packaging. The kegs are stable and stackable up to 3 layers tall when full in transit, allowing for optimal space utilisation on delivery trucks.
